Masked Intruders Paw Their Way Inside Peninsula Bank
The trespassers— of the 4-legged kind— knocked over a computer before being shooed to safety.
REDWOOD CITY, CA – A Redwood City bank was broken into Tuesday morning, but the intruders weren’t in it for the money; they just wanted to steal a little play time.
The Peninsula Humane Society responded to a report of two juvenile raccoons spotted inside the bank, which was closed to the public at the time.
A pursuit of the masked intruders ensued, and the animals known for their smarts and fearlessness gave it everything they had.

“The bank managers let our rescue staff into the bank, and after about 10 minutes of chasing the raccoons around the bank, we were finally able to safely shoo them outside,” PHS Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox said.
“They apparently didn’t want to leave the bank.”

The raccoons were spotted by a man using the ATM machine who reported the sighting to the PHS.
He’d assumed the creature he saw on a desk was a stuffed animal until it moved.
“There were muddy pawprints on a tree outside the bank, so we suspect the raccoons climbed the tree to the roof of the bank, and then somehow managed to crawl into the air ducts and fell through the ceiling tiles onto the floor of the bank,” Tarbox said.
All indications are that the raccoons had the time of their lives.
“There were several broken ceiling tiles, and the masked bandits knocked papers around and even a computer over. Thankfully the raccoons were not injured during their morning escapade, and to our knowledge they didn’t abscond with any money,” Tarbox said.
“It’s not every day an animal organization gets called to deal with a bank break in, but since the bank robbers were masked bandits of the wildlife kind, we were indeed the appropriate responders.”
