Mountain Lion Sighting Prompts Peninsula Shelter In Place

Police say two local schools were asked to shelter in place on Thursday after the report came in.

SAN MATEO, CA — Two San Mateo schools were placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a person called police to report they'd seen a mountain lion nearby, officials said. Police stressed that the animal did not appear "predatory or aggressive" but they wanted to be sure everyone was safe.

The sighting was called in at 8:02 a.m. in the vicinity of Fernwood Street and 36th Avenue, officers said.

"In an abundance of caution, Abbott Middle School and Hillsdale High School were advised to temporarily shelter in place (instruction will continue with the doors closed) as our officers conducted a thorough check of the campuses with school faculty," police said in a news release.
