Smoke Shops Found Selling Psilocybin, Cannabis And Illegal Tobacco In SMC Sweep: Police

More than 3,300 items were seized during inspections; a new county ban on kratom takes effect next month.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A series of compliance inspections at smoke shops across San Mateo County resulted in the seizure of more than 3,300 illegal products, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said.

“Smoke shops that are selling illegal products are being put on notice,” said Sheriff Ken Binder. “I’m proud of our deputies and partner agencies who are working to keep illegal and harmful products out of the hands of our youth. Together, we’re sending a clear message — illegal products and illicit drugs will not be tolerated in San Mateo County.”

The inspections were conducted over several months in partnership with the California Department of Public Health, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, and San Mateo County Health.

While many retailers were found to be in compliance, several businesses were cited for violating state and local laws, including selling psilocybin-infused mushroom products, cannabis-infused items, prohibited flavored tobacco and tobacco sold without a valid permit, officials said.

The crackdown comes as the county moves to tighten regulations on products sold at tobacco retailers.
