New Exhibit Opening January 16

A new exhibit about the fight to free the Peninsula of mosquitoes entitled "Fighting the Bite"

Exhibit Opening: January 12, 2016

Closes: April 10, 2016

On January 12, 2016, the San Mateo County History Museum, at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City, will open a new exhibit about the fight to free the Peninsula of mosquitoes entitled Fighting the Bite. The photo display will commemorate the centennial of the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District (SMCMVCD). In the early 1900s, mosquitoes plagued the Peninsula. Today it is a little-known story, but at times, in those days, conditions were so bad that businesses were forced to close while property values fell. With the 1915 Mosquito Abatement Act, a control program was launched to protect residents’ health and comfort. The exhibit will feature photographs representing SMCMVCD’s work over the last century, emphasizing its laboratory work, field operations and public outreach. The exhibit will run through April 10, 2016.
