Peninsula City Launches Community Police Academy

The city announced the launch of the San Mateo Police Department's Community Police Academy last week.

SAN MATEO, CA – Applications are now open for a new program that aims to help give the public a better understanding of how community policing in this Peninsula city.

The city announced the launch of the San Mateo Police Department’s Community Police Academy last week.

Local residents are encouraged to apply for the multi-week skill-building and educational program.

The San Mateo Police Department believes in a collaborative approach to policing,” city officials said in a news release.

“Our community policing model is equal parts community and law enforcement, which is what keeps San Mateo safe, vibrant, and healthy.”

City officials said in a news release the Academy offers a transparent view of how police work is conducted in the Peninsula department “and how they relate to servicing our community as a whole.”

The city is encouraging resident to join what it describes as an opportunity to learn about the roles and responsibilities of police staff.

The San Mateo Community Police Academy will be administered and taught by San Mateo police officers and/or local law enforcement experts to help provide you with different perspectives and expertise offered by these professionals.

A maximum of 20 students are permitted per academy. All attendees are required to wear a department issued polo shirt and identification lanyard during the class.

This is an 11-week course open to those who live and/or work in San Mateo. Applicants are required to be over 18 and pass a background check.

The session limited to 20 participants.
