Peninsula City Moves To Implement Plastics Ban

Plastic ban ordinance is expected to go before the council in late January or early February. It wouldn't be enforced until 2021.

SAN MATEO, CA — An ordinance that would ban plastic convenience products will go before San Mateo’s City Council early next year, The San Mateo Daily Journal reports.

The ban targets plastics used at restaurants and grocery and convenience stores according to the report.

The ban would impact 428 San Mateo locations, the report said.

The ordinance is expected to go before the council in late January or early February and its backers hope the city will start enforcing it in 2022, the report said.

An outreach program to restaurants and other businesses that sell prepared food would precede enforcement of the ordinance, the report said.

The measure appears to have the backing of councilwoman Diane Papan, who said putting off enforcement until 2022 will give businesses time to prepare amid more pressing challenges amid the coronavirus crisis according to the report

“While I’m not terribly excited about doing this during a pandemic, I think when we are looking that far out, it gives us time to adapt,” Papan said according to the report.
