Prosecutors said the shooting was a result of a dispute between Norteno and Sureno gang members.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A 23-year-old man pleaded no contest Wednesday to attempted murder charges for a 2015 shooting that injured a man in a vehicle in South San Francisco, San Mateo County prosecutors said.
Jose Nava entered the plea to the attempted murder charge with firearm and gang enhancements, as well as felony shooting at a car, in exchange for a sentence of 23 years in state prison with about 2.5 years of
credit time already served, according to the district attorney's office.
Nava was arrested after shots were fired at a vehicle in the area of Chestnut and Grand avenues around 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 6, 2015, according to South San Francisco police.

A then-29-year-old San Mateo man who was a passenger in the car was struck in the head by the gunfire. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and survived his injuries, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said the shooting was a result of a dispute between Norteno and Sureno gang members.
Nava admitted firing into the car but initially said he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors said several witnesses reported not seeing anything justifying the shooting.
