Person Hit, Killed on Caltrain Tracks in Redwood City

Officials say a trespasser was struck and killed Sunday night. [BREAKING]

REDWOOD CITY, CA – A man died after being hit by a train in Redwood City over the weekend, officials say.

According to Tasha Bartholomew of Caltrain, the incident happened around 9:15 p.m. Sunday night as a southbound train struck a trespasser on the tracks.

At this point, officials believe that the unidentified man had intentionally stepped into the path of the train, she said.

"No matter what the circumstances, it is always regrettable when a life is lost," she said. "Caltrain reminds everyone to be safe around train tracks. Caltrain also would like to thank our passengers for their patience as we deal with these sad incidents."

A total of 260 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the incident. They were transferred to another train after the coroner arrived on scene and transit police cleared the locomotive.

This is Caltrain's tenth fatality of 2016, according to Bartholomew.
