Redwood City BLM Mural Removal Triggers Online Petition

REDWOOD CITY, CA — The Redwood City City Council’s recent decision to remove a Black Lives Matter mural has roiled social justice activists who have launched an online petition protesting the move.

The mural was painted during a Fourth of July art celebration near Courthouse Square on Broadway by local resident Daniel Pease, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The council ordered the mural’s removal when Trump supporter Maria Rutenberg threatened to sue the city after her request to paint a “MAGA 2020” mural was declined, Climate Online reports.

“For many of us, the BLM mural is a powerful reminder of one of the greatest social justice movements in our country and one of the largest protests we’ve had here in Redwood City,” the Change.org post reads.

“The mural also marks our city as being in alignment with other cities that demand justice for George Floyd and other Black and brown people who live with injustice every day due to white supremacy.”
