SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA – A 49-year-old driver involved in a head-on crash on state Highway 1 near Pescadero on Friday night succumbed to his injuries Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to the CHP, Archibald was driving a 2002 Volkswagen north on the highway. At the same time, a 28-year-old Healdsburg man was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi in the highway's southbound lanes.
For reasons yet to be determined, one of the drivers crossed over the highway's double yellow lines, causing the two cars to crash into each other, CHP officials said.

Archibald was airlifted to Stanford Hospital. The driver of the Mitsubishi, identified as Jazz Hayhurst, also suffered major injuries and was taken via ambulance to Stanford Hospital, according to the CHP.
Aside from the drivers, there were no additional passengers in either vehicle.
After an investigation, CHP officers determined Hayhurst was under the influence of drugs at the time. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, CHP officials said.
Hayhurst remained hospitalized as of late Monday night.
