REDWOOD CITY, CA – The Redwood City City Council moved to open allow retail cannabis shops, The Palo Alto Daily Post reports.
The council authorized City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz to create an ordinance for up to six such stores, the report said.
Stores would be restricted from opening within 600 feet of a school or child center according to the report.

The stores figure to be a potential revenue source amid uncertain economic times.
Nearby cities on the Peninsula and South Bay, such as Palo Alto, San Carlos, Menlo Park and Los Altos have rejected cannabis shops, the report said.

Redwood City would become the second San Mateo County city to open cannabis shops according to the report. Pacifica is the other.
The shops would be subject to a 4 percent tax and would take in an estimated $1.32 million a year, according to the report, which cites the findings of Assistant City Manager Alex Khojikian.
