Redwood City Proposes Waste Rate Hike

If approved, most Redwood City residents would see a $1 monthly rate increase.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Redwood City’s City Council next month will hold a public hearing consider a proposed waste collection rate hike.

The council will consider raising the rates $1 a month for basic collection of residential solid waste and recyclable materials for 20-and 32-gallon bins used by 86 percent of Redwood City customers.

It would increase the rate for unscheduled collection by 2.57 percent.

The meeting will be held Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. on Zoom.

The proposed rate hikes would be used to cover the cost of services provided by Recology San Mateo County, city officials said.

Redwood City currently ranks among San Mateo County’s lowest rate payers, city officials said.

The rate hike would bring the monthly cost for 20-gallon bins to $16.87 and to $33.86 for 32-gallon bins.

Among the county’s 13 service areas, Redwood City has the fourth lowest rate for 20-gallon bins and the fifth lowest for bins in the 30-to 35-gallon range.

Burlingame customers pay the county’s lowest monthly rate for 20-gallon bins ($14.49) and East Palo Alto pays the highest ($48.56).

San Mateo customers pay the county’s lowest monthly rate for rates between 30 and 35 gallons ($24.29). The West Bay Sanitary District pays the highest rate ($51.00).
