COUNTY OF SAN MATEO TO HOLD FIRST-EVER YOUTH JOBS SUMMIT YOUTH TO LEARN PREPARATION SKILLS, APPLY FOR OPPORTUNITIES
(Redwood City, CA) –District Four Supervisor Warren Slocum and the County of San Mateo will hold the first-ever “Shaping Our Success Youth Jobs Summit” this month to prepare local teens and young adults to enter the workforce. The summit will be held over two consecutive Saturdays, April 15 and April 22, at 555 Marshall Street in downtown Redwood City.
The summit will bring together 120 teens and young adults ages 16 to 22 from underrepresented communities in Redwood City, East Palo Alto, Belle Haven and North Fair Oaks. Attendees will learn the necessary skills to be better prepared to land a job through workshops on resume-writing, job applications and interview preparation.
Participants will also have the opportunity to practice these skills immediately with employers offering summer jobs and internships at the summit. “We hope to make a lasting and indelible imprint on the lives and the futures of our youth,” said Slocum, who represents the communities of the youth attendees. “It struck me last summer, when we were interviewing for an intern in my office, that a number of the youth we were considering lacked the very basic fundamentals to help them land their first job. It was the impetus for this summit — to help our youth.”
Other event sponsors include: the San Mateo County Human Resources, San Mateo County Library System, the City of Redwood City, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Peninsula Young Writers, One East Palo Alto, Siena Youth Center, SWAG, Google, Jobs for Youth, James Stanfield Catering, Susie Cakes Bakery, San Mateo Credit Union, Cyclismo Café, the Redwood City San Mateo County Chamber of Commerce, Comcast, SamTrans and Wells Fargo. ###
