San Mateo Sheriff's Deputy Injured While Taking Someone Into Custody
A deputy approaching a man accused of attempted kidnapping and numerous other felonies went to the hospital for facial injuries.
REDWOOD CITY, CA — A man injured a San Mateo County Sheriff's deputy after a burst of crimes including robbery, burglary and an attempted abduction at a coffee shop, authorities said.
Nicholas Ibarra, 35, of East Palo Alto was accused of attempted kidnapping, commercial burglary, robbery, mayhem, aggravated assault on a deputy, resisting or obstructing an officer, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury and committing a felony while on bail.
Ibarra was taken into custody about 4:15 p.m. Thursday in the 2700 Block of El Camino Real, an unincorporated part of Redwood City, police said.

He attracted the attention of deputies when he allegedly attempted to cause traffic hazards for moving vehicles.
A deputy who approached him was attacked and received facial injuries that required medical attention at a hospital, the sheriff's office said.

Subsequent investigation revealed a series of additional crimes, including a robbery, burglary, and an attempted kidnapping of a staff member at a local coffee shop, deputies said.
