San Mateo Supervisors Approve $67M For Affordable Housing

The county approved $54.2 million for 10 affordable housing proposals, and $12.8 million to buy a San Mateo hotel for transitional housing.

REDWOOD CITY, CA —The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a major commitment to affordable housing at a Tuesday night meeting, paving the way for projects across the county.

Supervisors approved a $54.2 million investment to be distributed among 10 proposed affordable housing projects in Daly City, South San Francisco, East Palo Alto, Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City, and North Fair Oaks, county documents show.

If completed, these 10 projects would add an estimated 759 new units, with 110 designated for those with special needs or who have experienced homelessness and 138 designated as "extremely low income" units.

About $30 million comes from Measure K funds, with the remaining money from state and county sources, documents show.

County supervisors also declared their intent to purchase the Stone Villa Inn in San Mateo to serve as a housing option for county residents experiencing homelessness. The $12.8 million purchase would add 44 transitional housing units.

According to the San Mateo Daily Journal, the county has already purchased three other hotels for a similar purpose.
