📰 News we're reading

• Former Nonprofit Director Laundered More Than $800K, Gets Jail Time In SMC: Report (patch.com) — Redwood City readers are learning more about the sentencing of a former StarVista clinical director who admitted to laundering hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations meant for the San Mateo County behavioral health nonprofit. Prosecutors say she diverted about $813,000 over more than a decade, leading to a six‑month jail term, probation, community service, and further scrutiny of the nonprofit, which closed last year amid financial strain.

• 7-Eleven Theft Suspect Fights Clerk, Flees With Fire Extinguisher: Police (patch.com) — A 25-year-old Redwood City resident was arrested after San Mateo police responded to an early-morning theft report at a 7-Eleven, where a struggle with a clerk was reported. Officers later found the suspect nearby, recovered store property, and booked him into county jail on suspicion of robbery, resisting an officer, and tampering with fire equipment.

• $226M Shortfall Could Force Deep Cuts To SMC Services (patch.com) — San Mateo County officials in Redwood City are warning that a $226 million state funding shortfall could trigger deep cuts to public safety, health care, housing aid, and library and youth programs. With hundreds of county and city jobs potentially at risk, leaders are pressing state lawmakers to permanently fix the vehicle license fee replacement formula rather than rely on temporary patches.
