Serial Package Thief Caught in Belmont, Police Say
Police say the man was caught red-handed trying to take a package from a local porch.
A man suspected of multiple package thefts was arrested in Belmont when an alert homeowner spotted the man attempting to do it again, police said Wednesday.
28-year-old Edward Homick of Sunnyvale was arrested Tuesday, according to Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran.
“...Belmont Police received a call from a resident in the Central Neighborhood, reporting that they had just seen a man attempt to take a package that had just been delivered, off their porch,” Halleran said in a statement. “The suspect realized he had been seen and fled, however the resident was able to provide a description of the suspect and his vehicle, a black 2002 Honda Civic.”

Police went to the area right away, and pulled Homick over as he was leaving the area, according to the captain. Inside his car, police found several other stolen packages.
“Seven packages, addressed to various people in Belmont and other peninsula cities, were found in Homick’s car,” Halleran said. “Officers also recovered a bag containing ID and credit cards to multiple people.”

The suspected thief was taken to the Redwood City jail on charges of prowling, attempted petty theft and possession of stolen property, Halleran said.
Police are now working on contacting all the people of the stolen ID and credit cards.
“The successful outcome of this incident is the direct result of a resident making a quick call to police when they saw criminal activity,” Halleran said. “The resident’s call, with clear detailed information on what had happened and what the suspect and his vehicle looked like, is exactly what is needed.”
