Woodside firefighters helped extract the victims

One person died and another suffered life-threatening injuries after a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Interstate Highway 280 crashed into another vehicle, according to the CHP.

Emergency crews responded to the two-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate Highway 280 at Page Mill Road in Los Altos Hills just before 1 a.m. and located the two occupants trapped in their respective vehicles, according to the Palo Alto Fire Department.

Investigators are still trying to determine which driver was headed the wrong way and whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours as investigators worked the scene and crews cleared the wreckage, but the CHP used the median as a lane for traffic traveling south during the closure.
