'Widespread Rain' On Its Way to Redwood City, Woodside This Weekend: NWS

A series of storm systems is making its way through the region, and Mother Nature is saving the strongest for the end.

This National Weather Service image details the rain totals forecast for the Bay Area through Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Three storms may bring several inches or more of rain to multiple locations in the Bay Area by early next week, National Weather Service officials said.

The first storm, a mild one, rolled into the region on Thursday afternoon. A second is expected Friday night into Saturday.

“A third and more powerful system will bring widespread rain to our entire area starting Sunday evening and continuing into Tuesday morning,” according to the National Weather Service.

“This system will have ample moisture associated with it which will help produce rainfall amounts of 1 inche to 2 and a half inches for almost all urban locations with the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall at times. Coastal ranges should receive 3 to 5 inches with a few spots picking up over 6 inches in the Santa Cruz mountains...”

The coastal mountain ranges and the North Bay are expected to receive the most rain, with 3.58 inches expected in Bodega Bay, 3.18 inches expected in Santa Rosa and 3.77 inches expected in Half Moon Bay. San Francisco is expected to receive just under 2 inches and 2.01 inches is expected to fall in San Jose, weather service officials said.

East Bay inland locations are expected to get less rainfall. The forecast for Livermore is for 1.65 inches.

The storms will also bring wind to the region, with gusty southerly winds expected starting late Sunday afternoon and lasting through the evening, according to the weather service.

Urban areas could get winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of over 30 mph. Higher elevations may receive gusts of more than 40 mph.
