Woodside High School’s Athlete's of the Week: Semanu Attiogbe and Mackensie Person

Two track athletes that have impressed their Woodside coaches all year long are junior Mackensie Person and sophomore Semanu Attiogbe.  Although they are fairly new to track, they have excelled and advanced onto the Central Coast Section.  Person, who runs the 100, 200, 4 x 100, and the 4 x 400 says she has truly “fallen in love with track this year”, even though she also plays soccer at Woodside and currently at the club level.  Semanu’s experience has been similar, although a cross country performer in the fall, he considers track his “main sport”.  Track is often seen as an individual competition, however Attiogbe was asked to try the triple jump by his coach, Pablo Aguilera, for the sake of the team.  He stepped up to the challenge and performed exceedingly well, jumping nearly 44’ at the CCS trials, placing him in the finals this Friday at San Jose City College where he hopes to leap 45’. Like Person, Semanu says track is “a lot of fun”, and the highlight of his season so far came when he came in first place at the PAL finals.  Given his lack of experience in the triple jump it’s a relatively phenomenal achievement for Semanu to advance this far into the CCS.  Good luck to Semanu at Friday’s competition, and congratulations to Mackensie for a great season, go ‘Cats!
