A Dozen People Apply for Open Seat on Oakland School Board

The school board will appoint the new member, who will represent Montclair and other portions of District 4.

About a dozen people have applied to fill a vacant seat on the Oakland school board, according to an article on Oakland Local.

The new appointee will represent District 4, which includes Montclair as well as portions of other Oakland hill areas and the Fruitvale and Laurel districts.

The seat was vacated by Dr. Gary Yee when he was named acting superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District following Supt. Tony Smith's unexpected resignation earlier this year.

The six other school board members will choose an appointee from among the applicants at their June 12 meeting, Oakland Local reports. The appointment will last until the November 2014 general election, when voters will select a new District 4 representative.

Applicants include Anne Campbell Washington, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan's chief of staff; Karl Debro, who has been a college readiness coach at Oakland Technical High School; and applicants with children at Montclair and Thornhill Elementary Schools.
