OAKLAND, CA — With the 2016-2017 school year quickly approaching, drivers from the ride-sharing business Lyft will deliver 4,500 backpacks with school supplies to 80 schools today, according to Oakland Unified School District officials.

Eighty volunteer drivers will pick up the backpacks at 9 a.m. at the Oakland Technology Exchange Warehouse located at 1680 14th St. The drivers, in their pink-mustached vehicles, will then deliver the packs and supplies to various school campuses across the city, OUSD officials said.

The event was created by the Oakland Ed Fund and Lyft in an effort to supply students in need with the essential tools needed to be successful in school.
