Firefighters determined that a candle left lit in the kitchen was the source of the blaze.

Firefighters were able to locate and rescue two dogs inside as the fire burned in the kitchen, with heavy smoke billowing throughout the home, officials said.

A candle that was left lit on the kitchen table had ignited a Christmas wreath that was surrounding it, fire officials determined.

"The homeowners were notified and returned home where their two dogs were reunited with them," Rohnert Park fire officials said.

The home was deemed unsafe amid heavy smoke damage, a preliminary inspection revealed.

The family elected to stay with family for the night.

"Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety would like to remind everyone during this holiday season that holiday decorations and candles are often the cause of fire when left unattended," officials wrote in a statement.
