Sonoma

County will dedicate a Blue Star By-Way Marker to honor service men and women

on Flag Day. The event takes place 10 a.m. June 14 at Santa Rosa Memorial Park,

1900 Franklin Avenue in Santa Rosa.

This

local tribute to the Armed Forces of America is part of the Blue Star Memorial program.

It began in 1944 with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey

Council of Garden Club as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. By 1945,

the National Council of State Garden Clubs had adopted the program and began a

Blue Star Highway system that today covers thousands of miles across the

Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.

A

large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker is placed at appropriate

locations along the way, including cemeteries, parks, and veteran’s facilities.

The Blue Star image itself became an icon in World War II. It appeared on flags

and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war, as well as in churches

and businesses.

This event is sponsored by Santa Rosa Garden Club,

a member of California Garden Clubs, Inc. & National Garden Clubs, Inc. and

is hosted by Santa Rosa Memorial Park.

“It is a privilege to be able to host this tribute. The

By-Way Marker will be right at home alongside our POW/MIA memorial and 5 Gold

Star Bench,’ said Laura Neisius, the cemetery’s general manager.
