Body Found Near Crashed Car Off Highway 1

SONOMA COUNTY, CA – A woman's body was found late this morning about 600 feet down a hillside off state Highway 1 south of Fort Ross, Monte Rio Fire Protection District Chief Steve Baxman said.

The woman is presumed to be the driver of a vehicle that a passing motorist saw go off the coastal highway around 4 p.m. Monday.

The car was found on the beach about 900 feet below the highway, Baxman said.

Cal Fire, a California Highway Patrol plane, State Parks, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office's helicopter and Monte Rio and Timber Cove firefighters responded to the incident over the past two days, Baxman said.
