The driver of a GEO Metro was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after a fiery crash west of Windsor this morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The male driver was speeding north on Eastside Road south of Riverfront Regional Park around 9 a.m., CHP Officer Jon Sloat said. The driver lost control and ran off the roadway, then struck a tree and overturned in a ditch, Sloat said.

The Geo Metro caught on fire, and several passersby, including a Sonoma County road crew, used up two fire extinguishers to try to put out the fire.
