Firefighters Battle Blaze at Waste Disposal Center

It appears that the fire was accidental.

Firefighters extinguished a fire at a waste disposal center Sunday in unincorporated Santa Rosa, a fire battalion chief said.

The fire was first reported at 5:35 p.m. at Redwood Empire Disposal, located at 3400 Standish Ave., according to Fire Battalion Chief Mark Basque. When crews arrived, they discovered a 20-foot tall pile of garbage burning outside, Basque said.

Although a majority of the fire was exterior, the one-alarm fire caused serious damage to the disposal center’s sorting equipment, according to Basque.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control within 45 minutes, Basque said. There were no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. However, according to Basque, the fire appears to have started accidentally, from burning material that was in a load of garbage.
