Firefighters Observe 9/11: Rohnert Park Photo Of The Week

Memorial stair climbs are a tradition on 9/11; these Rohnert Park firefighters took to a local gym to remember the fallen.

ROHNERT PARK, CA — Members at 24-Hour Fitness in Rohnert Park wishing to use the stair-climbing machines Monday morning may have had to wait a little longer than usual, but with good reason. With Monday marking the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, three Rohnert Park firefighters donned their full gear and climbed 110 stairs on the machines to honor and remember the 343 firefighters who perished in the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center in New York City.

According to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, 9/11 memorial stair climbs are a way for firefighters to pay tribute to the New York firefighters who gave their lives that day so that others might live — with 110 stairs equivalent to the number of stories at the World Trade Center.

"Thank you to Captain Nicks, Engineer Snyder and Firefighter Lamaison for remembering this day and GREAT JOB!" said City of Rohnert Park Police & Fire in a Facebook post.
