Happy World Habitat Day

World Habitat Day - October 1 - gives 'gimme shelter' a new meaning.

World Habitat Day - October 1 - was established to reflect on the need for shelter that exists today. It encourages us to take a closer look at the available shelter in our cities and towns and nearby areas.
Who Established World Habitat Day?
This day of shelter acknowledgment was established by the United Nations in 1986. The aim was to make the right of shelter and the habitat as a whole a priority for all future generations.
On World Habitat Day different counties acknowledge this day of awareness differently. There are activities worldwide designed to take a closer look at urbanization and its impact on the environment. Does human housing enroach upon wildlife sustainability? How does poverty impact housing?
Shelter is My Right
The concept is based upon the notion that we all deserve a safe and adequate place to live in. Much is being done here in Sonoma County to help see that people have warm, dry, sanitary living arrangements. Organizations like COTS and Catholic Charities and others are to be commended for their work on behalf of those in need of shelter.
There are more organizations that also do their part. Let’s hope this day inspires others to help where they can.
