Homeless Man Arrested After Allegedly Admitting To Stealing, Crashing BMW

BREAKING: The car was reported stolen from Sebastopol Plaza, police said.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA – A transient man was arrested in Sebastopol on Tuesday after allegedly admitting to a police officer that he had stolen a vehicle.

The car, a 2003 BMW X5, was reported stolen from the Sebastopol Plaza on Nov. 9, police said.

On Tuesday, a resident called police to report a suspicious vehicle parked on Golden Ridge Avenue. A police officer checked the car's records and discovered that it was the stolen BMW.

The officer recognized items inside the vehicle as belonging to Chester Evan Smith, 49.

Police found Smith at the Plaza and he admitted to stealing the car and crashing it, causing major damage, police said.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of felony vehicle theft and felony possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked into Sonoma County Jail, according to police.
