The holidays are a time to make plans with family and friends, however, what if it’s your family, friends and holiday plans that are causing your evaluated stress level?
First things first, the expectation of a “perfect” holiday doesn’t exist; so don’t fret about having to out-do what you did last year. That idea of a “perfect” holiday is fed by advertisements, and the only thing that is truly important throughout the holidays is the people you are with. So take a deep breath, and don’t stress about making extravagant plans. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.
For caregivers, the holidays are particularly difficult. ‘Tis the season, but for caregivers it is a time of special vigilance of their loved ones who, like everyone else, have holidays hopes and needs they want to realize.

The holiday stress and anxiety can feel like too much, even if it is “good” stress. Here are a few tips for how to get through your holiday blues and the demands of creating a festive holiday environment for your loved ones:
1. If you've always felt depressed during the holidays, caregiving won't make things easier. Visits with a counselor may help cope with this depression. If lack of sunlight during winter is a source of depression, see your doctor to discuss possible therapies.

2. Simplify, simplify, simplify! Yes, that will mean disappointing a few people, perhaps elders and children alike, but simplification may be the only pathway you have to remain sane.
3. Set boundaries and learn to detach from the negative feedback you may get from others because of changes you are making. Recognize other peoples’ feelings, but don’t allow yourself to react or be controlled by them without considering your own needs.
4. Use music as a soothing tool for all. If you have elders in nursing homes, bring them a CD player and CDs so they can play songs they enjoy. Around the house, play Christmas tunes your kids like. If you have some favorite holiday tunes, play those too.
