Pedestrian Dies on Highway 101

Prior to being struck, the pedestrian caused a 3-vehicle crash involving drivers trying to avoid him, according to the CHP.

One person died on U.S. Highway 101 Sunday night near Rohnert Park after he allegedly walked into oncoming traffic.

At 9:42 p.m., California Highway Patrol first received a report of a pedestrian standing in the southbound lanes of the highway, just north of the Golf Course Drive off-ramp, according to CHP officials. According to the report, the male pedestrian was walking into the roadway, with his arms in the air.

One vehicle nearly struck the pedestrian and a three-vehicle collision occurred during the incident, according to CHP officials.

At 9:45 p.m., CHP received another report that the pedestrian had been struck. CHP officers closed two southbound lanes of the highway at 9:54 p.m., as they investigated the incident.

The two lanes reopened just before 11 p.m., CHP officials said.

CHP did not identify the vehicle that struck the pedestrian and did not say if the driver stayed at the scene. It’s also unclear if any others were injured as a result of the collision.
