Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Car On Highway 116
The collision happened near Old Gravenstein Highway.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Wednesday afternoon on state Highway 116 near Old Gravenstein Highway in the Sebastopol area.
California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to the collision at 2:48 p.m. and were notified by fire personnel there was one fatality, CHP Officer David deRutte said.
CHP's preliminary investigation indicated a San Francisco man was driving a Volvo westbound on SR-116 and a female pedestrian tried to cross the roadway by walking northbound across the roadway.

The Volvo driver saw the pedestrian as she entered the roadway in front of his path of travel. He swerved but was not able to avoid hitting the pedestrian, deRutte said.
"There is no crosswalk at this location and there were several vehicles behind the Volvo," deRutte said. "It remains under investigation what caused the pedestrian to cross the roadway."

The pedestrian's name was expected to be released by the Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office once her next of kin were properly notified.
