Small Earthquakes Near Santa Rosa Rattle Sonoma County

A 2.5-magnitude earthquake struck at 11:11 a.m Friday near Larkfield-Wikiup and was followed by a 2.1-magnitude earthquake at 12:11 p.m. Friday.

SANTA ROSA, CA— Two small earthquakes with preliminary magnitudes of 2.5 and 2.1 struck Friday near the Sonoma County community of Larkfield-Wikiup, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first quake was recorded at 11:11 a.m. and was centered 1.3 miles from Larkfield-Wikiup, 4 miles from Santa Rosa and 5 miles from Windsor, the USGS said.

An hour later, at 12:11 p.m., an earthquake struck 2 miles from Larkfield-Wikiup, 3.5 miles from Santa Rosa, 5.6 miles from Windsor and 7 miles from Sebastopol, according to the USGS.

The larger quake was felt in Santa Rosa, Windsor, Sebastopol and Calistoga, according to responses submitted to the USGS.

No injuries or damages were immediately reported.

Friday's earthquakes struck the Rodgers Creek Fault near Santa Rosa. In October 1969, two earthquakes — 5.6- and 5.7-magnitude — struck the fault. An 1893 earthquake near Santa Rosa and an 1898 earthquake near Mare Island are thought to have occurred along or near the Rodgers Creek Fault, according to the USGS.
