SoCo Dance Theater presents "SoCo Dance Theater Concert 2014"
Eclectic array of dance pieces presented on main stage at Sonoma State
SoCo Dance Theater, an emerging professional, multi-generational dance company based in Sonoma County, presents its dance concert May 2 to May 4, 2014 at the Evert B. Person Theatre, located on the Sonoma State University campus in Rohnert Park, CA.
Dedicated to the creation and promotion of dynamic and engaging contemporary dance, SoCo Dance Theater supports and showcases its accomplished and acclaimed choreographers while it explores traditional and experimental approaches to dance.
The SoCo Dance Theater Concert features an eclectic array of dance pieces, including "Donna Anna Study," choreographed by internationally renowned and respected Modern Dance choreographer Mark Haim, featuring SoCo Dance Theater member and choreographer Kristen Daley.
Haim, a Seattle resident with long and impressive roster of dance work to his credit, created "Donna Anna Study" in 2003 for Kristen Daley. The piece is an interpretation of a portion of Mozart's "Don Giovanni," which tells the tale of an arrogant and lecherous Spanish nobleman. Filled with what Haim describes as "amplified passion," this piece communicates the feeling of the opera, while it plays on duality and emotional contrasts.
The SoCo Dance Theater Concert 2014 program includes:
"Parameters"
- Choreographer - Virginia Matthews:
A dance piece for six women who span forty years in age with a musical score by WaterSaw, a SF Bay Area 4-piece band.
"For Us"
- Choreographer – Mercy Sidbury:
Built from each SoCo dancer’s choreography, this piece sources itself from the individuality of perceptions. A physically rich contemporary work, it celebrates each member’s unique expression.
"Systems' Migration"
- Choreographer – Nancy Lyons
Spoken word interlinks with contemporary cello music by Zoë Keating and Joan Jeanrenaud in this new dance piece which connects to the technological "cloud" - linking our global Internet devices and the intricate web of our bodily desires.
"Mother’s Love, Mother’s Labor, Mother’s Letters to the Sea"
- Choreographer – Nichele Van Portfleet
As part of her Senior Project at Sonoma State University, Van Portfleet created this production which is focused on the ways dance can serve as communication. This piece explores the kinetic relationship between partners sharing weight, space, time.
"Donna Anna Study"
- Choreographer – Mark Haim
Filled with what choreographer Mark Haim describes as "amplified passion," this piece - inspired by Mozart's "Don Giovanni" - communicates the feeling of the opera, playing on duality and emotional contrasts.
