“We are replacing the first musical of our 2015-2016 season with a return engagement of ‘Mary Poppins,’ “ said Gene Abravaya, Artistic Director of Spreckels Theatre Company. “There were several sold out performances when we presented ‘Mary Poppins’ in May. Given the critical acclaim and the many people who could not get tickets, we felt justified bringing this production back again.”

“We are replacing ‘A Little Princess’ with this return engagement of ‘Mary Poppins.’ That means the Spreckels Theatre Company Summer Youth Program will now be based on materials from ‘Mary Poppins.’ The young people participating in the summer program will be incorporated as ‘Mary Poppins’ cast members and will appear in the August encore presentation,” said Abravaya.

Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins” recalls the enchanting story of the Banks family and how their lives are changed when the stern, but magical nanny Mary Poppins arrives at their London home at 17 Cherry Tree Lane. This fun family show features beloved tunes from the Walt Disney film and new songs written for this stage musical; plus rousing, high flying, toe-tapping dance numbers; and magical effects.

This main stage production is presented with the new Paradyne projection system, developed by Spreckels Performing Arts Center, combining still images and animations to create multiple backdrop effects - creating a visual aesthetic that’s exciting and visually surprising for audiences of the 21st Century.
