TAKE THE KIDS TO BRIGADOON
By Sandy and Richard Riccardi
Brigadoon is one of the most beautiful, enchanting musicals in the entire classic musical theater repertoire. Written by the masters, Lerner and Loewe, it is absolutely perfect for children and adults alike. At Spreckels Theater in Rohnert Park, there are even more reasons to bring the kids—besides colorful authentic Scottish costumes by Pamela Enz, a full, lush orchestra directed by Cynthia Heath, and lovely, energetic performances by the company, there are also large and varied video projections of the Scottish Highlands, sure to capture the attention of our video-addicted youth while simultaneously providing an enhanced, genuine live theater experience.

The story is one of time-travel and romance. Two American men get lost while hunting in the Highlands. A mystical 200-year-old city named Brigadoon appears (or, more accurately, a city which only appears once every hundred years), and the rest is theater magic and dramatic intrigue. Choreographed by Michella Snider, there is an authentic Scottish sword-dance, several beautiful ballets inspired by the original work of Agnes B. DeMille (we especially liked the can’t-see-the-bride-before-the-wedding dance), and energetic company numbers. Songs like “Heather on the Hill” and “Almost Like Being in Love” have remained in the American Standard Songbook repertoire for over 60 years, and for good reason. Outstanding in his singing is tenor Sean O’Brien as Charlie.
So go enjoy your local talent-filled theater performing a classic musical, and bring the kids! (Sit ten rows back at least if dry-ice bothers you—there is much mist.
