The Global War on
Terrorism Wall of Remembrance has made its way to Sonoma County.
This traveling memorial will call Santa Rosa Memorial Park home
Friday May 23 through Monday May 26. It will be free and open to the
public around the clock during its stay. Dedication and invocation
scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday May 24 at 1900 Franklin Avenue, Santa
Rosa.
The two-sided wall
measures six feet tall and 94 feet long. On one side are the names of
the victims of 9/11 terror attacks and names of those who have died
in uniform fighting against terror. On the other side of the wall is
the Global War on Terror in a timeline which started in 1983.
Round the clock guards
make it possible for the display to be available 24 hours each day.
“This makes it ideal for those who work during the day to have a
chance to visit,” said Santa Rosa Memorial Park General Manager
Laura Neisius.
The Wall of Remembrance,
sponsored here by Michael
Ottolini AMVETS Post 40 of Sonoma County. It is a
Victory2Vision project and was inspired by a wish by active duty
military for a memorial, the cowardly acts of terrorists on 9/11/2001
and Vietnam Veterans. It was designed, built and funded by United
States Marine David Brown and Vision2Victory Founder Richard (JR)
Nichols in 2011 to commemorate the 10 year remembrance of 9/11. Built
to be displayed once it received so much public support that it now
travels the country.
To date the
memorial has traveled more than 10,000 miles to such states as North
Carolina, NewYork, Nebraska, New Mexico, Iowa, Idaho and Washington
DC. Prior to arriving in Sonoma County it traveled first to
Bakersfield then Florida. Upcoming tour stops include Indiana and
Pennsylvania and Indiana.
Vision 2 Victory is a
California nonprofit. They created the Wall of
Remembrance to help heal hidden wounds. They also provide a variety
of other projects include Pass the Helmet and they raise funds to
grant wishes to wounded war veterans. Their mission is to reach all
those impacted by Global Terrorism here at home.
