United Way's Schools of Hope Program Seeks Volunteer Reading Tutors Throughout Sonoma County

A call for reading volunteers - tutors - to commit 30 minutes per week to reading with a first- or second-grade student.

Become a tutor, change a life.

United Way of the Wine Country launched Schools of Hope in 2010 to improve reading skills for third-grade students reading below grade level. Schools of Hope is an early intervention model whose core component is to pair trained volunteers with students for one-on-one literacy tutoring. Volunteer tutors spend 30 minutes per week tutoring a first- or second-grade student at Sonoma County schools in: Cloverdale, Geyserville, Guerneville, Forestville, Santa Rosa, Cotati, Petaluma and Sonoma.

Education is a one of the three key building blocks United Way recognizes must be in place for individual and community success. It is essential for finding and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits. Reading is not only a cornerstone of education but also vital for mastering the skills necessary to thrive. Currently, 49% of our area’s third graders are reading below grade level, and United Way, along with its partnering local school districts and community organizations, set a goal to see 90% of these students reading at or above grade level by 2020.
