UPDATE On This Morning's Hwy 101 Fatality

Pedestrian was struck and killed by a big rig, CHP said.

A pedestrian was killed this morning when he was struck by a big-rig while walking on northbound U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Rosa, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses said the man in his 20s was walking south on the shoulder of northbound Highway 101 when he suddenly stepped into the slow lane directly in front of an oncoming big-rig, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

The man was thrown onto the pavement of the right shoulder, Sloat said. A CHP officer traveling north on Highway 101 requested an ambulance and an off-duty paramedic began CPR, but the pedestrian was declared dead, according to Sloat.
