Visions and Vines, Winds and Strings, Sex and Tacos

The events calendar shows a few key happenings in this particular Land o' Patch this weekend, and we've been trying to draw your attention to them all week.

At SSU, the Green Music Center has the Symphonic Wind Ensemble on Friday night, the Pacific Guitar Ensemble on Sunday and in between a full day of high school bands from California and Nevada in the Sonoma Invitational Wind Band Festival on Saturday. We also wrote about the new play at SSU, "Séance," about sex, weed and tacos; you'll find that article here. It's written by student playwright Dylan Waite, and is the first student-written play in the department's main season. Details, dates and tickets.

SSU is also recognizing International Women's Day - today, March 8 - with "Lost Women: Transient Technologies and Invisible Authors in the Seventeenth Century," from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Student Union. Bennington College's Carol Pal tells the story of "a transnational network of female scholars who were active members of the 17th-century republic of letters, and demonstrates that this intellectual commonwealth was a much more eclectic and diverse assemblage than had previously been assumed." Okay, we're almost done with SSU but one more item of interest: The documentary film "Rebels with a Cause" shows Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Warren Auditorium. Filmmakers Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto partnered with local PBS affiliate KRCB to document the extraordinary efforts of the ordinary citizens who saved the lands of the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area from development during the 1950s. It's narrated by Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand, and it's inspirational and true.

Saturday night in Cotati, get your groove on at the Redwood Café with Mighty Groove, hip shakin’, danceable funk and retro-soul. That would mean songs by War, Prince, Tower of Power, Michael Jackson and those guys. $10 cover, 9 - midnight.

Saturday at Sally Tomatoes in RP, the WISE Foundation (Waugh Invests in Student Excellence) will hold its annual  fundraiser, Visions and Vines, starting at 5 p.m. It will include a cocktail hour and fine dining, along with a live auction featuring  local travel, private tours and student art projects, and entertainment provided by Pure Energy Productions.
