Better Business Bureau Serving Northeast California is warning seniors of automated telephone calls offering free medicare alert systems.
According to consumers, the calls claim the senior was recommended for the free product by a friend or relative. It then prompts the consumer to accept the offer by pressing a number. If the offer is accepted, another call is initiated to collect credit card information.
In some cases, those who provided credit card information report being charged monthly service fees later.
"Free offers are enticing, but it should be known that these often fail to disclose conditions leading to unauthorized charges," said Gary Almond, president of BBB Serving Northeast California.
BBB reminds consumers:
- Remember that pre-recorded or robocalls are typically not lawful in California.
- Check the background of any company before doing business.
- Be wary of doing business with a company calling from a blocked phone number.
- If you receive a robocall from a company you do not have a relationship with, file a complaint with the FTC.
