All babies and children develop at their own pace, and most reach milestones within the age range noted by milestone charts. (Milestones are your little one’s “firsts”, when they reach skills such as smiling, babbling, and learning to crawl.) However, some children show signs of developmental delays—they don’t reach milestones for play, learning, speech, behavior and movement in a typical fashion.

Latest research from the CDC on autism shows that about 1 in 68 children has been identified with austism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Autism Awareness Month has been reminding parents that you should act early if you suspect your child has a developmental delay. The CDC’s campaign called “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” provides tools and information for parents to track their child’s development and know what steps to take if concern arises. In the South Placer area, we have several organizations that offer resources and support for parents with children with ASD or another developmental conditions. Warmline Family Resource Center specifically provides support, events, information, and referrals for families of children with special needs.
