While this area may be sunnier than most, consider how much sun your home truly receives. Consider comparison shopping and gaining more than one opinion before locking in a decision.
BBB offers the following tips for those interested in leasing, installing or purchasing solar panels:
Research how the panels work with your energy company
- Find out what programs the company offers.
- Ask about federal and state laws, as well as local codes that are applicable to the installation of the panels.
- Inquire about the cost of installing a new meter.
Research tax credits
- Find out how you qualify and if there is a filing deadline.
- Research how long you are eligible, whether you will be taxed and how much you will receive.
Ask the solar company questions
- Will you lease or purchase the panels? Compare costs.
- Find out how long the contract is and what happens if they go out of business.
- Research cancellation fees and maintenance costs.
- Ask if there are options to move the panels if you move, or if your new home is not suitable for solar, if you can cancel.
