Roseville HSS Hosts Vibrant Guru Vandana Event Honoring Local Educators

ROCKLIN, CA — The Roseville branch of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) and its youth wing hosted a vibrant and culturally rich Guru Vandana (Teacher Appreciation) event on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Ruhkala Elementary School in Rocklin. The celebration drew over 115 attendees, including 15 local educators and their families. Rocklin Vice Mayor Bill Halldin also attended, marking the afternoon as a significant community success.

A Warm Welcome and Cultural Showcases

The program commenced with a heartfelt welcome to the honored educators by Deepthi Udayagiri, HSS Roseville Guru Vandana Coordinator, along with MCs Diya Sandeep and Suraj Varma. The event was officially inaugurated with the deep-prajwalan (traditional lamp-lighting ceremony) performed by Pradeep Mishra, HSS Sacramento Youth Director, and Ramkrishna Pothannagaari, HSS Greater Sacramento Director.

Following the invocation, Deepthi Udayagiri recited the Ganapathi Vandana, a traditional prayer for auspicious beginnings, setting a reverent tone for the afternoon. Tushar Pawar, Director of HSS Roseville, then offered insightful opening remarks on the sacred bond between teacher and student rooted in Hindu philosophy.

The cultural segment featured a series of dynamic performances by the chapter's youth, including:

• A choral rendition of “Ekadantaya,” a song dedicated to the various aspects of the deity Ganesha.
• A vibrant instrumental performance of the rachana Bhoop featuring flute and drums, presented by the HSS teens.
• A synchronized, musical demonstration of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) by the younger children.

The Guru Vandana Ceremony and Teacher Felicitation

Before the formal felicitation, attendees viewed a touching video presentation featuring students expressing gratitude to their respective teachers. During the Guru Vandana ceremony, students performed aarti (a traditional ceremony of light symbolizing reverence and mindfulness) and sought blessings from their educators.

In a special presentation, teachers received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition on behalf of US Congressman Kevin Kiley (CA-03), presented by HSS Greater Sacramento Directors Ramkrishna Pothannagari and Sandeep Gangadharan. Vice Mayor of Rocklin Bill Halldin, who was also honored at the event, spoke warmly about the importance of teacher appreciation and praised the vital role educators play in shaping the local community.

Adding to the profound spiritual nature of the afternoon, a group of parents came together to recite three specific slokas (verses) from the Bhagavad Gita, beautifully illustrating the high esteem and sacred status teachers hold within Hindu culture.

The formal program concluded with an inspiring address by Pradeep Mishra on the timeless value of the teacher-student relationship, emphasizing how these heritage values are passed on to the next generation. Closing out the ceremony, Deepthi Udayagiri delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks, expressing deep gratitude to the teachers and guests who made the afternoon possible.

Interactive Exhibits and Festive Activities

The conclusion of the formal program gave way to a lively celebration on the main floor, where teachers, students, and parents joined together for Garba—a traditional, high-energy folk dance performed in a circular formation to the rhythm of beating drums.

Attendees also explored the Darshana exhibition, an educational display highlighting the history, contributions, and culture of Hindu civilization. Other popular attractions included:

• A Festive Photo Booth: Teachers and students donned colorful, traditional Indian attire—including lehengas, dupattas, Nehru vests, and pagadis (turbans)—to capture memories.
• Henna Artistry: Skilled artists applied intricate henna designs to delighted guests.
• Traditional Refreshments: Attendees sampled authentic Indian culinary treats, including samosas, gulab jamun, and freshly brewed hot masala chai.
