SACRAMENTO, CA — Multiple shooters were involved in the mass shooting that left six people dead and injured 12 more in downtown Sacramento early Sunday, according to police.

Police also confirmed a fight occurred just prior to the shooting, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said at a news conference Sunday afternoon.

A police camera at 10th and K Streets recorded some of the shooting, and several people reported tips, according to police.

Three men and three women were killed in the shooting, Lester said.

Two of the six people who were killed in the shooting have been identified, according to ABC10 Sacramento. Family members of Sergio Harris and DeVazia Turner confirmed to the TV station that they were among those killed in the mass shooting.

Harris, 38, leaves behind a wife and two daughters. Turner, 29, was living in Vacaville but was from Sacramento, according to the report.

Six people were killed and 12 are hospitalized with injuries from the shooting, Sacramento police said.

Police in the downtown area heard gunshots around 2 a.m. and found a large crowd in the area of 10th Street and K Street, Lester told reporters.

Police attempted "life-saving measures" on gunshot victims, but six people died at the scene, authorities said. Police recovered "at least one firearm" at the scene, but details about the gun were not disclosed.

"We are asking for the public's help in [identifying] the suspects in this and providing any information to help us solve this," Lester said.

At a news conference Sunday morning, members of the Sacramento City Council called on people with information or video to submit it to the Sacramento Police Department through its evidence portal for the shooting.

Police did not release information on suspects or a description.

The area from 9th to 13th Street was closed between L and J Street as police investigated. Residents were asked to avoid the area. The area near the shooting has several bars, restaurants and clubs.

Video posted on Twitter showed people running through the street as the sound of rapid gunfire could be heard in the background. Video showed multiple ambulances had been sent to the scene.

Kelsey Schar, 18, was staying on the fourth floor of Citizen Hotel when she said she heard gunshots and saw flashes in the dark. She walked to the window and “saw a guy running and just shooting,” Schar told The Associated Press in an interview.

Her friend, Madalyn Woodard, 17, said she saw a crowd in the street scatter amid the gunfire. She said she saw a girl who appeared to have been shot in the arm lying on the ground. Security guards from a nearby nightclub rushed to help the girl with what looked like napkins to try to stanch the bleeding.

Pop music duo Aly & AJ, made up of sisters Alyson and AJ Michalka of Disney Channel fame, performed at Crest Theatre near the corner of 10th and K Streets on Saturday night. Their tour bus was caught in the gunfire but nobody was hurt, according to a post from the duo's official Twitter account.

City Hall is functioning as an information center for families of victims with city staff and police available to help. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and Elk Grove Police Department are helping the Sacramento Police Department with calls throughout the city Sunday during the shooting investigation, police said.

The shooting occurred just over a month after a man shot four people, including his three daughters, before shooting himself at The Church in Sacramento. It is the 12th mass shooting in California this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

In a statement, California Gov. Gavin Newsom sent his condolences to family and friends of the victims and the Sacramento community. He said his administration was working closely with local and state law enforcement agencies during the early portions of the investigation.

"What we do know at this point is that another mass casualty shooting has occurred, leaving families with lost loved ones, multiple individuals injured and a community in grief," Newsom said. "The scourge of gun violence continues to be a crisis in our country, and we must resolve to bring an end to this carnage."

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg also decried "rising gun violence," in a statement and expressed confidence in Lester.

"Words can't express my shock & sadness this morning," Steinberg said. "The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend. We await more information about exactly what transpired in this tragic incident."

The area of the shooting is less than a mile from the Golden 1 Center, where the Sacramento Kings are scheduled to host the Golden State Warriors at 6 p.m. Sunday.

"Our community grieves as we mourn those lost today senselessly killed by gun violence," the Kings said in a statement. "Our prayers are with those who have been wounded and our heart goes out to all the families in anguish affected by this devastating act."
