CA Stops Buying Most Gas-Powered Cars To Cut Carbon Emissions
Under new climate policies by Gov. Gavin Newsom, California has stopped purchasing gas-powered sedans for state agencies.
SACRAMENTO, CA — The state of California has stopped buying gas-powered sedans for state agencies as part of Gov. Gavin Newsom's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the state announced Friday.
The policy exempts public safety vehicles. About 8,400 of the state's 40,000 vehicles are sedans, according to the Associated Press.
The new rules will also require state agencies to buy vehicles only from companies that recognize California's ability to set its own emissions standards — which will exclude major manufacturers including General Motors and Toyota, according to CalMatters.

Also on Friday, the state sued the Trump administration for revoking the state's authority to set its own fuel-efficiency standards.
“Car makers that have chosen to be on the wrong side of history will be on the losing end of California’s buying power,” Gov. Newsom said in a statement.
