Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Saturday October 2nd, 2021!

First, today's weather:

Very warm with plenty of sun. High: 92 Low: 55.

Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:

  1. Sacramento County wants to remind you to sign up for Sacramento Alert. By signing up for Sacramento Alert, you will receive location-based emergency alerts quickly at work and at home by providing all your typical locations as well as your phone numbers, email addresses, and TTY device information. All information in the Sacramento Alert Self-Registration Portal is kept strictly confidential and you will only receive alerts that are critical and time-sensitive, including severe weather, wildfires, flooding, unexpected road closures, missing persons, and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods in specific geographic locations. (Saccounty.net)
  2. "Rain, rain go away!" said no one in Sacramento. We all recognize the need for rain, as the City of Sacramento reaches a grim milestone of 6 months without measurable precipitation. That's the longest dry spell since 1880! This water year — which traditionally ends on September 30 — has seen precipitation levels only 43% of normal. There is no rain in the forecast this weekend, either, but officials say there is a slight chance of rain on Thursday. Here's hoping! (Good Day Sacramento)
  3. A judge in Sacramento made the unusual decision to allow a juvenile court proceeding to be broadcast online. The appearance of the Elverta teens that brutally attacked their mother and brother was made public, the judge said, to ensure others see the consequences of the actions of these teens. "Other teenagers reading that may feel emboldened to do something like that if they don't see what happens as a result of that conduct," Judge Mouzis said. The 16-year-old was assigned a public defender who requested a mental evaluation for his client. Kevin Adamson, one of the best-known juvenile defense attorneys in the region, was retained by the family to represent the 13-year-old. (CBS Sacramento)
  4. Sacramento police are investigating a deadly double shooting that took place in the Oak Park neighborhood early Friday morning. Two adult men were shot and died at the scene. Police say neither is considered a suspect. (KCRA3)
  5. Some brave kids got a shot in the arm this summer as part of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine trial for children ages 5 - 11. In June, 11-year-old Luci Guardino got her first shot as part of Pfizer's trial. She, along with 2,267 other participants, are now waiting to see if they got the vaccine or a placebo. Lucy is anxious to learn because, she says, if she got the placebo she wants to get the vaccine as soon as possible. If the FDA determines the vaccine is safe and effective for 5- through 11-year-old children, it could be approved by late October or November. (KCRA3)

  • Invite an aardvark to your backyard shindig! Why? Because an Aardvark can eat up to 50,000 insects in a single night! Learn about aardvark appetite among other fun facts by visiting the Sacramento Zoo. Looks like this aardvark has found the girl of his dreams. (Facebook)
  • Controversy is a-brewin' at the Capitol. An environmental group says it is suing several state agencies to block the demolition of the California Capitol annex. They said current plans, which include a modern, glass building with an underground parking garage and visitor's center, would destroy a historically significant building and a variety of important trees that outline the annex, all at the cost of about $1B. Project proponents assert that the current annex is an outdated structure. The building is littered with hazardous material like asbestos and mold, and the hallways are so outdated that they violate American Disabilities Act rules, they say.
