🌱 Land Park Ponies Retire + Sacramento Grocery Icon Dies

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Hey, Sacramento! Here's everything you need to know to get this Tuesday started off right.

First, today's weather:

Periods of clouds and sun. High: 76 Low: 45.

Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:

  1. The Sacramento Police Department is searching for a missing 15-year-old boy. According to a statement from the Department, 15-year-old Jackson Glazier was last seen on foot near the 3200 block of Truxel Road in the Natomas area. Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby posted some photos of Glazier to her Facebook page as well. https://www.facebook.com/100057722997128/posts/408614387739324

  2. A 72-year-old Sacramento man says he was forced to remove a statue of Jesus from outside his front door at the Glen Ellen Mutual Housing Community apartment complex because the apartment manager called it a lease violation, displaying personal items in common areas. The statue has been there for 15 years. Diablo Nash lives in the same complex and has also recently received a stack of violation notices from the same new apartment manager. People who live in the complex have reached out to the Sacramento Tenants Union for help. Sacramento Tenant's Union volunteer Erica Jaramillo said that 8 of 38 tenants have complained about written and verbal notices at the apartment. She calls it the most egregious case she has seen in Sacramento. (CBS Sacramento)
  3. After 37 years, Marilyn Hagemann, owner of Land Park Pony Rides in Sacramento, said she and her ponies will be retiring at the end of May. The pony rides have been an institution at the park. Many are sorry to see them go and are coming out for one last ride with their kids and grandkids. Before the ponies retire, the pony rides are available for $7 a ride on weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless it is a busy day and the ponies get tired. Hagemann said they close a little early some days if the ponies have had a long day and need to rest. The city of Sacramento told KCRA 3 it recently learned about the impending retirement and says it "will be working to determine next best steps for this long-standing activity." The city said it is open to pony rides as well as other potential possibilities moving forward. (KCRA3)
  4. There was a show of solidarity as more than a thousand people gathered at the state Capitol Sunday to pray for peace and an end to Russia's attack on Ukraine. The State Capitol dome was adorned in blue and yellow in support of Ukraine at the vigil. Many within the Slavic community are following the developments closely, and they are finding some comfort in community during a time of extreme uncertainty. (ABC10)
  5. Although initially projecting to see a $100,000 shortfall in this year's budget, the City of Citrus Heights is now on track to see a likely $2.9 million surplus in its originally planned $32.6 million budget. In a mid-year update on Thursday, for the city's fiscal year that ends June 30, Interim Administrative Services Director Bill Zenoni told the City Council that projections now show a $2.5 million increase in revenues largely from increased sales tax and building activity, motor vehicle fees, and additional funding from a state insurance pool. He also said another $1.4 million is also expected largely due to savings from unfilled staff positions. "These (revenue figures) tell you that the city is alive, it's thriving, it's vibrant," said Councilman Bret Daniels. (Citrus Heights Sentinel/ subscription may be required)

Looking for a healthy alternative to that mid-week glass (or three) of wine? Our partners at Betera set out to create beverages that were sophisticated and flavorful enough to drink at cocktail hour but with zero hangover risk. (Their motto is "Drink like there's tomorrow.") Betera's drinks are designed by a Michelin-starred chef using natural botanicals — they're lightly effervescent, sippable, refreshingly bitter and at home in a stem glass or in a highball on the rocks. Betera offers three recipes — Rhubarb-Hibiscus, Elderflower-Lime and Ginger-Orange. We've tried all three and loved them equally — we recommend the mixed case as a great place to start.
Betera has extended their 15% discount on first orders to Daily readers, in appreciation for the enthusiastic response so far. Enter Patch15 at checkout and https://bit.ly/TryBetera.
