Mask Mandate + Smoky Sacramento + Olympics Star
Welcome to the Sacramento Patch daily newsletter for everything happening Friday July 30th, 2021 in The River City.

Good morning, River City!
Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Friday July 30th, 2021!
First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 100 Low: 62.
Here are the top stories today in Sacramento:
- Sacramento County has issued an order mandating the use of masks in all indoor settings regardless of vaccination status. The mask mandate went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 30. "The continued increase in cases is concerning - universal indoor use of masks, is the least disruptive and most immediately impactful measure to take to slow the rate of transmission," Sacramento County Public Health Officer Olivia Kasirye said. (ABC10)
- Can't go inside without a mask? Why not stay outside, then? Well, in Sacramento and the surrounding foothills, that was problematic over the last few days as well due to smoke settling in the area from the Dixie fire. Many outdoor activities were canceled due to the dangers from prolonged exposure to the smoke. The air quality ranged from "unhealthy" in Sacramento to "very unhealthy" in Rancho Cordova. (CBS Sacramento)
- A raging fire destroyed a two-story home on... wait for it... Burns Way in Sacramento on Thursday morning. All family members are safe and accounted for and firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to other homes in the area. (KCRA3)
- According to a new study by SmartAsset, Sacramento ranks fifteenth in the nation for economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Mid-size cities are fairing better than large ones as we rebound from the effects of the virus. (Original Post: SmartAsset, News Coverage: ABC10)
- Just one second separated first from fifth place at the Olympics lightweight women's double sculls. Folsom's own Michelle Sechser came up just short of a medal, finishing in that fifth place spot with her teammate Molly Reckford. Great effort, Michelle! You make Sacramento proud! (usrowing.org)

Friday's events in Sacramento
- Natomas Unified School District is offering a pop-up vaccination clinic for students and staff interested in being vaccinated before the start of the 2021-2022 school year! Everyone 12 and up is invited, but you have to sign up at the link. (All Day)
- Choose your own goldrush adventure at the Sacramento History Museum! You'll start your journey from afar and then choose which characters you'd like to follow through the museum on your search for gold. Every tour is different! (5 pm)
- Councilmember Rick Jennings wants friends and family to get together again, so he's throwing a party at Garcia Bend Park! There will be food trucks from SactoMoFo, a jazz concert and then, when the sun goes down, watch Spiderman: Into The Spider-verse on the outdoor big screen! (5 pm)
- The Shakespeare on the Vine Troupe presents The Taming Of The Shrew at Vannatta Winery & Gallery in Elk Grove. Maybe Shakespeare makes a little more sense after a couple of glasses of wine..? (6 pm)
- Wax on; wax off! Relive your childhood, or maybe your parents' childhood, with this airing of 1984 edition of The Karate Kid at The Crest Theater. I honestly don't think Ralph Macchio has changed one bit. (7 pm)
- You like quirky, downright weird stuff and somehow you've found yourself wondering what it would be like to see the cult phenomenon The Room on the big screen. Your wait is over! Tower Theater is showing The Room, written by Tommy Wiseau, directed by Tommy Wiseau and starring Tommy Wiseau! (10 pm)

- Do you have a great idea for a restaurant, a food truck or just a great recipe that you think would do well on the market? Learn how to bring your ideas to fruition in this 12-week business course presented by Food Alchemist. It's looking to help 20 entrepreneurs in under-represented parts of the Sacramento community.
- Speaking of Food Alchemist, it is also coordinating a community outreach to help people in need of cooling down in the extreme heat we've been enduring. The County and City of Sacramento run 8 cooling stations when the weather really heats up, but there are also dozens of grass root centers run by volunteers and coordinated by Food Alchemist. This is essential as the government-run centers are often in city centers where it's difficult for some in need to get to. You can volunteer to host one in your yard if you like!
